Related entries: Rumors

Gadgets on the Go has managed to uncover the official specs of the much rumored Treo 700wx, and the full specs include:

  • runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC
  • powered by a XScale 312MHz CPU
  • a SDIO memory slot
  • 128MB NVRAM and 60MB memory
  • dual-band EV-DO
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Bluetooth 1.2, IR
  • a 240×240 touchscreen display

Not bad, although pretty much the usual Treo specs, but the QWERTY keyboard is a new - and very welcome - thing.

Quiet lately…

Related entries: General

I’m not sure why, but it’s been really quiet lately when it comes to new cellphone announcements and releases. We haven’t heard a single peep from Sony Ericsson in the past few weeks, and Samsung isn’t really launching many new handsets either. It’s mostly been Treo’s and BlackBerry’s that have been stealing the spotlight.

Maybe we’re in for the final end of a year run towards Christmas? Hopefully we’ll be seeing some great new phones soon though, because it’s getting a bit boring. Where are the new Walkman series and the 5GB samsung phones?

Samsung SPH-M610 clamshell

Related entries: News

Samsung has another new phone, called the SPH-M610, which seems to be a CDMA version of the D830, and will be carried by Sprint. It includes the following features:

  • a 2.0 megapixel camera
  • a QVGA internal and OLED external display
  • a microSD memory expansion slot
  • Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP support)

Not too bad, and it’s only 9.9mm thick, which makes it even sleeker. No word yet on price or availability, but expect it soon through Sprint, for around $150 (just my guess).

BlackBerry with WiFi?

Related entries: Rumors

According to Engadget Mobile and their insider source, “Boy Genius”, RIM will release a BlackBerry with Wi-Fi before Christmas, and will also release another BlackBerry with built-in camera, similar to the BlackBerry Pearl, but with more RAM, a faster processor and more.

Nothing official of course, but Engadget’s source has always been right so far, and seems to know his stuff, so it’s likely that this is true as well, which is pretty cool, especially the BlackBerry with Wi-Fi.

Samsung launches 8GB phone

Related entries: News

As usual, Samsung is on the cutting edge of the newest cellphones, and this time they’ve managed to grab all the headlines again, with their new B570 phone which comes with a whopping 8GB of storage. That’s more than most MP3 players and other gadgets, and this is supposed to be “just” a phone. I think Samsung is really getting ‘it’. We as consumers don’t want to carry a half dozen gadgets with us (i.e., cellphone, mp3 player, pda, etc), but a unified device which does it all, and does it good. Samsung is definitely moving towards that goal with this new phone, which doesn’t only include 8GB of storage, but also the following features:

  • Satellite DMB (aka the ability to watch TV)
  • GPS
  • plays VOD / MOD / MP3 (audio and video)
  • document viewer, mobile printing
  • TV out
  • 5.1 channel stereo sound
  • a 2.0 megapixel camera
  • a 1.98″ 240×320 262k color TFT display

Definitely an all-round entertainment gadget, and so much more than just a cellphone. It can be used to read documents, listen to music, view pictures/photos, watch a movie, watch TV and more. The only thing I’m missing somewhat is Wi-Fi, and internet capabilities, such as web browsing, RSS feeds, (push) email, etc.

Unfortunately, like all amazing phones, Korea is getting it first, and it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing this phone anytime soon, if ever. But we can also hope!

Cellphones of the Future

Related entries: General

BusinessWeek has published a slideshow called “Cellphones of the Future”, which displays eight innovative phones, which are mostly prototypes and not available to the general public.

Click here to view the slideshow. Phones that are mentioned include a phone with no buttons, a “back to the future” phone (aka old skool), the Samsung Ultra Edition phone (which will actually be available very soon) and more.

Nothing really amazing, and the slideshow is quite short, but it’s still a nice little time waster, and if you want more information, there’s a related article as well.

Engadget Mobile reviews the LG “Chocolate” VX8500

Related entries: Reviews

Engadget Mobile has reviewed the LG VX8500, also known as the LG Chocolate, and comes to the following conclusion:

In the end, despite the intense hype buildup surrounding its release, we could only conclude that the VX8500 is a well-equipped (save the lack of a speakerphone) midrange device with a pretty face — no more, no less. Enough to do RAZR-like damage in the marketplace? Probably not, but then again, we haven’t seen the last of the Chocolate.

This sounds like a pretty good conclusion, although LG probably doesn’t like it being called a ‘midrange device’, but that’s what the Engadget guys think.

Sony Ericsson unveils Z610

Related entries: News

Sony Ericsson has announced a new phone today, the Z610, pictured above, which comes with the following features:

  • runs on GMS 900 / 1800 / 1900 / UMTS
  • 3G capabilities
  • a 2.0″ 220×176 256k color display
  • a secondary 128×36 OLED display
  • 16 MB of memory
  • a 2.0 megapixel camera
  • Bluetooth / Infrared / USB
  • music playback: MP3 / AAC / AAC+ / eAAC+
  • a Memory Stick Micro expansion slot
  • push-email, RSS feeds, internet connectivity

Pretty decent specs, and the phone’s internet features are pretty cool. The phone itself looks quite stylish as well, and it’s a clamshell, which I’m always very fond of (as opposed to the usual Sony Ericsson candybar style).
